Hello All,

I don't know if this is the right place to post this but here goes.

What is your favorite frpg to play?

What type of character do you like to play?

What type of game play do you like? (hack&slash, puzzle/riddle, quest,ect..)

What kind of DM/Gamemaster do you like?

Also, feel free to make any comments that you think could ad to the above subjects.

Just looking to see how the gamers on this site think/feel about frpg in general.

Thanks, Mike

My preference is for Shadowrun - especially now that the rules are comprehensible.
Its extremely tweakable - no classes or alignments or such. The world setting allows for pretty much any sort of adventure you'd want; hack and slash (or more aptly, spray and grenade), political, horror, comedy.
My preference is for trouble-makers. One of the reasons I'm playing a paladin in Frank's game is that I've never played that sort of character before. I still manage to cause trouble, though (I'm opening the damned door).

I do prefere more role playing and less roll playing - but I've had several GMs who have had the policy of at least one fight in a session.

I honestly like D&D and while AD&Dv2 will always hold a special place for me I have come to appreciate some of the advances that 3.5 has brought to the table. I'm also a fan of the Vampire the Masquerade's world, but i haven't actually played it much.
I usually play either a tank- type character or a fighter alt like monks and rangers, but this has to do with most campaigns I've played in not lasting very long and therefor spellcasters don't get a chance to come into there own.
I like a varied campaign where we could spend a couple of weeks hacking our way through a dungeon, then while we spend the spoils in our city of choice we get wrapped up in a plot to assassinate a city leader and must figure out who's behind the plot to clear our names all the while evading the guards and thugs out to collect the bounty on us.
I also like being a part of something bigger, a strike team carrying out missions that let the main force win the battle, or "real life" chess-like battles against a evil mastermind.

So i guess I like a lot of different things, if someone wants to run it I'll play it and probably have fun doing it. I guess that makes me easy.

What is your favorite frpg to play?

Right now, HackMaster - hands down. The more I run this system, the more I like it. It's a steep learning curve as a GM, but it really does have a rule for just about everything. One of the deepest RPGs I've every played.

What type of character do you like to play?

Generally, I'm a ranger guy, with druids, bards, and fighter/thieves all jockeying for runner up. I nearly always play humans, although I've had a lot of fun playing a dwarven cleric. I very rarely get a chance to play, though.

What type of game play do you like? (hack&slash, puzzle/riddle, quest,ect..)

Not to cop out, but I like a well-rounded game over anything else. I enjoy all aspects of the game; too much (or not enough) of any one thing, and I feel like I'm missing out. The most important thing, though, is feeling like a) I have an opportunity to change the game world (without heavy metaplot crap getting in the way), and b) I have an opportunity to NOT change to world, but instead to fail trying. If I can tell it's being handed to me, I quickly lose interest.

What kind of DM/Gamemaster do you like?

One who's enjoying what he's doing, and is prepared to be surprised by the ingenuity of his players (and go along with it when they think of something he didn't). The worst thing in the world is when you can't do something a) "because there isn't a rule for it," b) "because it's not in the module," or c) because the GM didn't think of it beforehand.

Hah - I'm adding one of my own:

What one piece of advice would you give players?

Well, I'm glad you asked! That advice would be: TAKE THE DAMN ADVENTURE HOOK! I know, we're supposed to get into character, and immersive roleplaying and all that, and it's cute to say "my character wouldn't do that / be interested in that / whatever," but if I throw a wrecked wagon on the road in front of you, with obvious goblin tracks leading off into the bushes (or whatever), and you decide that Lord Duke Ignatius Cobblebottom the VIIth doesn't happen to be interested in investigating because it's "out of character," then be prepared to sit there while I roll up infinite random encounters for you to fight, all of which mysteriously have left their treasures back at the lair. Y'know, because I probably didn't spend all week crafting a fun sidequest for you to do, you ingrates. ;)

TAKE THE DAMN ADVENTURE HOOK!

With the adendum that the hook should match the game. An old Shadowrun game I was in had the hook of a starving African village, where clearly some Great Evil had taken hold. Being Shadowrunners, however, we all just said 'yup, sucks to be them, but we aint getting paid for it. Lets get out of here.'
Les, our GM, was actually mad at us for abandoning them, but we tried explaining 'We're Shadowrunners, and particularly violent and mercenary ones at that. We dont care what happens to them.'

What is your favorite frpg to play?
I've only played D&D. And i still consider myself new to it because of the multitudes of things that just don't automatically occur to me (like adding my dex into a ranged attack roll, taking 10 or 20 on certain checks, etc)

I've tabletopped vampire once, and that was fun, and I was in a Palladium fantasy campagin at one point, which was a really great time when we could get together and play it...

What type of character do you like to play?
I like gnome spellcasters. Sure, gnomes get a -2 to strength. But they automatically get 3 cantrips and speak w/animals once a day just as a racial thing. They get bonuses to hide and listen, which i tend to use fairly often. They've got lowlight vision, and as a small character, they're carrying capacity is 3/4 that of a medium character, but everything i carry only weighs half.

I like spellcasters (particularly sorcerers, bards, and druids) because in later levels, they get to do some really cool stuff, and because with the game mechanics, it's easier to know what a spell does than doing a lot of math to figure out what happens when you "just run up and smash it"

What type of game play do you like? (hack&slash, puzzle/riddle, quest,ect..)

I like ROLEplaying. That's my favorite part of the whole thing - the interaction between characters, and making skill checks. I love figuring out puzzles, so long as enough information is given to actually finish the puzzle - it's annoying when it doesn't make sense, or everything is to specific to figure out.

I also like overarching plots, where you aren't just around today, but you've got a long term goal. Like having to travel around to various lands and enlist help from a member of each race to go defeat some kind of evil. Or needing a bunch of different artifacts to make something work.

While occasionally I'm happy to just beat the snot out of a bunch of monsters, I'm more likely to get bored in battles. Everything gets so long and dragged out that even though it's only been 6 seconds of game time since i (just for example) got into position to sneak attack a guy, he's moved out of range and been hit by 5 other people.

What kind of DM/Gamemaster do you like?
One who rolls with the punches. I sometimes do really spontaneous things, it's nice when the DM can chuckle and go "ok, good..." and even better when they play along. I really like when a DM has a player character in the game that travels with the party and helps out in battles and acts as a guide or source of knowledge. Jumping between 50 NPCs gets confusing and obnoxious sometimes - you don't remember where you got what information.

Advice:
*remember, it's just a game!
*DM's - talk slower, and expect me to ask you to repeat yourself. I'm usually writing it down so i'm in the know and don't have to ask you 50 times later.

What type of character do you like to play?

In D&D: Paladin

WOD: Werewolf: Old - ShadowLord New - StormLord
WOD: Vampire: Old - City Gangrel (Antitribue Sabbat) New - Gangrel

What type of game play do you like?

All, from Combat to politics.

What kind of DM/Gamemaster do you like?

All, I find the different styles refreshing, and I learn and grow better as a DM from them.

Advice:

If your running around Moonguard as an alliance toon on world of warcraft with your pvp tag on, and suddenly there is a hunters mark over your head, relax, stay calm, and it will all be over in a moment.... and this trip to your closest graveyard is sponcered by your local Horde Hunter... have a safe trip.
